At least 27 people have died in a fire that broke out at an amusement arcade in Rajkot, in the Indian state of Gujarat, according to Indian media reports. Among the deceased were at least nine minors.
Several firefighting teams have gone to the scene to put out the flames, whose origin is currently unknown, according to media such as the ‘Hindustan Times’ newspaper and NDTV television.
The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has expressed his regret in a message on the social network X. “Local authorities are working to provide all possible assistance to those affected,” he highlighted.
The authorities have already announced the payment of compensation to the families of the fatalities and those injured in the incident, as well as to cover medical expenses.
“This is the first time that children have died in a fire in a recreational area (…). We are going to take measures, but the priority right now is to save as many people as possible,” said local official Darshita Shah. .
The bodies of the deceased have been “completely charred”, making identification difficult, explained police officer Vinayak Patel. The owners of the recreational establishment have already been arrested.
Last Thursday, ten more people died and 60 more were injured in a fire in Dombivli, in the Indian state of Maharashtra, after an explosion that was apparently heard up to three kilometers away.
