At least 20 people have died as a result of the collision between a bus and a truck in the vicinity of the Senegalese city of Louga, located in the northeast of the African country, just over a week after another traffic accident that resulted in 40 dead.
The latest accident took place on Monday and has also left 24 injured, 19 of them seriously, according to the government spokesman, Abdou Karim Fofana, quoted by the APS agency.
The president, Macky Sall, has expressed his condolences for the victims on Twitter and has called for “strengthening road safety measures”, something that the Government plans to carry out with a battery of measures. About 700 people die on average in Senegal every year in traffic accidents.
Among the measures promised by the Executive are the end of night transport between cities, the prohibition of importing second-hand tires or the withdrawal of certain vehicles from circulation. The transport sector has threatened to go on strike.
