Another journalist is shot dead in Mexico, his daughter is injured

A Mexican journalist died after being shot at on Wednesday in the northwest of the country in front of his home along with his daughter, who was injured and is in serious condition, denounced the media outlet where he worked, in a new episode of violence against communicators in the Latin American nation.

Antonio de la Cruz, reporter for news website Express.press and his 23-year-old daughter were attacked when they were aboard a truck in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas state, Miguel Domínguez, editorial director of Expreso Victoria, told the network. Millennium TV.

“They opened fire on both of them,” he said. “He lost his life and his daughter understands that he (is) in serious condition,” she added.

The Tamaulipas prosecutor’s office reported in a statement that it had launched an investigation into the journalist’s death and that a woman had been injured by a firearm in the incident.

The spokesman for the presidency of Mexico, Jesús Ramírez, initially stated on his Twitter account that the communicator’s daughter had also died and his wife was injured, but shortly after he clarified that De la Cruz’s daughter was in serious condition and her spouse was unharmed.

“This is an event that obviously cannot go unpunished like so many others that have unfortunately occurred,” said Dominguez. “There is no way we are going to keep silent about what happened,” she stressed.

Violence against journalists has skyrocketed during the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, according to a report published in April by Article 19, a free expression advocacy group.

Statistics from civil organizations indicate that more than a dozen communicators have died as victims of violence this year, most of them in the first quarter of the year.

Although the president has denied that these attacks are “state crimes”, in his 2021 Article 19 report, he documented that the authorities of the different levels of government were responsible for 42.55% of the total attacks against the press that year.
