Several vans from the outpost of Colombian President Gustavo Petro were seized in the Colombian municipality of El Tarra in the department of Norte de Santander. The president will travel to this area on Friday.
The outpost belongs to the National Protection Unit, UNP, which verified security before Petro’s visit to this region where the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army and the FARC dissidents are vying for control of the territory.
The Colombian Presidency posted a statement on its Twitter account saying that the vehicles were attacked with long-range firearms. In addition, in the San Pablo sector, where the events occurred, there would be an illegal checkpoint installed by about six people.
At the scene, the caravan of vehicles ignored the stop. One of the vehicles managed to pass the checkpoint and was left with a flat tire, while the other was left before the blockade.
According to the statement from the Presidency, one of the officials was detained and later released.
Who is behind the attack is still under investigation.
