The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has held a meeting this Sunday with the Ukrainian President, Volodimir Zelensky, in a historic first trip by an Australian Prime Minister to Ukraine, in which he has promised to increase military aid to kyiv with a package of 95.8 million euros ($100 million), with new sanctions on Russian gold and various oligarchs.

Albanese has finished his trip through Europe and after attending the NATO summit in Madrid, he paid a surprise visit to the Ukrainian leader at the Presidential Palace in kyiv and has listed that Australia will give Ukraine 14 armored personnel carriers, 20 Bushmaster and drones in a new $100 million aid package.

The Australian Prime Minister has assured that his visit to the Ukrainian capital has been a demonstration of “the solidarity that exists” between the Australian and Ukrainian peoples, as reported by the Australian newspaper ‘The Age’.

He also indicated that Australia would continue to support the Ukrainian government and people for “as long as it takes” for it to emerge victorious in defense of its sovereignty and homeland.

“Because they are fighting for the rule of international law, they are fighting so that the international norms in which we carry out our activity are respected and produced in an orderly manner,” added Albanese.

Zelenski has proposed to Albanese that Australia “join the process of Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction” and the Australian president has stated that he will collaborate in the reconstruction.

“I appreciate (Australia’s) decision to join the process. It’s important to us, it’s important to the whole world,” Zelensky said.
