A Palestinian who was wounded on Thursday after being shot by Israeli forces in the Al Arrub refugee camp, north of the West Bank city of Hebron, has died this Friday due to the seriousness of his injuries.
Medical sources cited by the Palestinian news agency WAFA have indicated that the deceased, Mohamad Jaouabre, 22, was shot in the head on Thursday. The man has died at Al Ahliu Hospital.
The Israeli army has indicated that the military entered the camp after identifying several masked Palestinians who threw stones at motorists on nearby Route 60, the main highway that crosses the West Bank from north to south.
Thus, he has stated in statements to the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’ that “during the persecution, violent riots broke out in which masked men threw stones and concrete blocks from rooftops at the troops, endangering their lives.”
For this reason, he explained that the military responded through the use of “riot control means and Ruger shots”, before confirming that at least one person was hit by shots.
On the other hand, the Palestinian Ministry of Health has highlighted on its Facebook social network account that two Palestinians were injured early this Friday after being shot by “settlers” near the village of Qusra, in the north of the West Bank. .
The incidents come after a raid carried out on Wednesday by the Israeli army in Nablus that left at least eleven Palestinians dead and close to a hundred wounded, amid rising tensions in the area.
After that, the United Nations envoy for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wennesland, stressed that he is maintaining contact “with the parties involved” to try to “reduce tensions”, while asking “all parties” that they “avoid steps that could worsen an already volatile situation.”
Tensions in the area have risen in recent months, which has set off alarm bells internationally. The most recent escalation took place at the end of January, when a dozen Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli forces in a raid on a refugee camp in Jenin. After that, seven Israelis were killed in an attack in the Neve Yaakov settlement.
