On a visit to AMD’s Austin headquarters, GamersNexus visited several of the company’s labs and test departments, among which is a highlight detailing AMD’s plans to include a vapor chamber in its AMD Ryzen 7000 processors for socket AM5.
However, it seems that this idea was discarded due to its infeasibility, since, although a slight temperature improvement of about 3 degrees was appreciated, the high cost that was going to be associated with this technology made it not worth continuing with itdespite how close the company was to launch something like that.
It’s no wonder they wanted to, as while the AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors were only recently released, an IHS with an integrated vapor chamber has been in the works since at least before the COVID-19 pandemic, So it’s an interesting concept that has taken a lot of development resources.
Hopefully if vapor chamber technology gets to a point where it’s much cheaper to include one with every processor, we can see them in the AM5 chips, since its thick IHS lends itself to it.
