The president of Colombia signed energy agreements in Germany amid questions about the impact of exploitation on the human rights of the indigenous population.

The central point in the visit of President Gustavo Petro is energy; Germany has already tripled the importation of coal from Colombia in the last two years, but many human rights organizations have criticized that it has been done at the expense of the rights of the mainly indigenous population that lives around the deposits.
The memorandum of understanding signed this Friday by the governments of Colombia and Germany focuses on promoting the exploitation of the so-called green hydrogen and its derivatives, where Germany will support with the necessary technology for its sustainable exploitation in Colombia.
In addition, Germany offers military cooperation in the training of the Colombian army and police, another delicate point that the German government assured that it will take care of in its aspect of custody of human rights.
Germany also promised to return Colombian archaeological treasures that have arrived illegitimately at its museums. Petro met Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank Walter Steinmeier. The president will culminate his visit this Saturday.
