The oppositionist Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), and the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who aspires to extend his mandate by five years, have encouraged citizens to go to the polls from their respective polling stations in the second round of the presidential elections.
The Turkish president greeted his supporters before casting his vote at a polling station in the Uskudar district of Istanbul, accompanied by his wife, Emine Erdogan, according to the newspaper ‘Daily Sabah’.
“Turkey fought for democracy with a turnout of up to 90 percent (…) I pray to God that this country will be beneficial for our country and our nation,” he said, adding that the second round will end “quickly.”
For his part, the opposition member Kiliçdaroglu has urged citizens to vote from a polling station in Ankara. “I invite all citizens to go to the polls to put an end to an authoritarian regime and for there to be true freedom and democracy in this country,” he said.
