The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan express its sincere appreciation for the strong support of like-minded allies and partners for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA), the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO).
During the 76th session of the WHA general debate, Guatemalan representatives expressed their support for Taiwan’s efforts to participate in the WHA, qualifying the country as a key partner in the global public health community, MOFA reported.
In addition, representatives from Belize, Nauru, the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Marshall Islands also expressed their support for Taiwan’s observer status.
The MOFA noted that these allies refuted the interpretations of UNGA resolutions 2758 and WHA resolutions 25.1 made by the Chinese and Pakistani representatives the previous day.
The endorsement continued with comments from representatives of countries including Australia, Canada, France, Japan, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and the United States, who expressed similar sentiments, MOFA noted.
Taiwan highlights G7 support for peace
Describing Taiwan as a model in public health, these countries urged its inclusion in the international health network, as well as its participation in the WHO and WHA as an observer, the ministry added.
The MOFA noted that “the growing support of officials and friends around the world encourages the Government and people of Taiwan. The nation is committed to working with international partners in a spirit of pragmatism, professionalism and a willingness to contribute to global health security.”
In addition, the ministry urged the WHO to reject the pressure “and deceit from China and instead listen to the international call.”
The world body should allow Taiwan’s participation in its meetings, mechanisms and activities to fulfill its “Health for All” principle, the MOFA said.
