7 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Ukrainian authorities have proposed to the Polish government to temporarily reduce grain exports in order to alleviate the internal crisis unleashed in Poland, where farmers complain about the lack of tariffs on wheat from Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian side made a proposal to greatly limit for some time, and for the moment even stop, the arrival of grains in Poland,” the Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed on its official Twitter profile on Friday.

Henryk Kowalczyk submitted his resignation as Poland’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development on Wednesday in response to a series of protests by farmers over the importation of grain from Ukraine, exempted from customs duties by decision of the European Commission.

The former Minister of Agriculture reported that the Polish government had asked the European Union at the end of March to reintroduce tariffs, a request that, however, to date has been ignored by Brussels.

Already on Wednesday, the Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, and the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, addressed this matter during their meeting in Warsaw and recognized the need to reach an agreement to resolve this situation, classified by Kowalczyk as a national crisis.

The export of cereals from Ukrainian ports has been one of the main, and practically the only, agreements reached between Russia and Ukraine which, with the mediation of the United Nations, managed to approve last year a plan for the shipment of grain through the waters of the Black Sea.
