A Tunisian court has sentenced to death a man accused of activating an antipersonnel mine in an attack carried out in June 2019 near the border with Algeria, an event that resulted in the death of an Army captain.
According to information collected by the Radio Mosaique station, the defendant, identified as Raed Tuati, has been sentenced for his role in the attack, executed as a military vehicle passed by on Mount Chaambi, which resulted in three other soldiers being wounded.
The man had previously been sentenced to more than 50 years in prison for various charges of terrorism, although in this case the court has handed down a death sentence. In this same case, three people have been sentenced to between four and eight years in prison.
Mount Chaambi is located in Kasserine province, the scene of numerous anti-terrorist operations in recent years. Tunisia and Algeria share a porous border routinely used by smugglers and for the infiltration of fighters and weapons.
