The Senegalese Parliament strips former Prime Minister Aminata Touré of her seat after breaking ties with the president

Senegal’s Parliament has stripped former Prime Minister Aminata Touré, a longtime ally of President Macky Sall, of her seat following her distancing from the ruling party and her announcement of a 2024 presidential bid.

“I just found out about my exclusion from the National Assembly by Macky Sall, in a total violation of the law,” criticized the former prime minister through her official account on the social network Twitter.

“I am more determined than ever to continue my fight for the consolidation of Senegalese democracy and against his attempt to achieve a third term, something that is morally and legally unacceptable,” she stressed.

The decision has been adopted during an emergency meeting called by the government coalition Benno Bokk Yaakaar (BBY) to address the situation of Touré, who was the head of the list of this group in the 2022 legislative elections.

Touré, who left the block to become an independent parliamentarian in the new Parliament, did not notify his “resignation”, something that, according to the Constitution, would imply the withdrawal of his seat, according to the Senegalese state news agency, APS. .

The opposition has denounced on several occasions that the president has plans to run for a third term, although Sall has ruled out that he is going to opt for this route. The Senegalese constitution limits the total number of terms to two and an attempt to extend his stay in power could lead to instability.
