The EU prepares more sanctions against Iran for the persecution and death sentences against protesters

BRUSSELS, Jan 16. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Union is preparing a new round of sanctions against Iran for the internal repression against demonstrators who participate in the multiple pro-democratic protests after the death in custody of the young Mahsa Amini last September.

As diplomatic sources have confirmed to Europa Press, the Twenty-seven plan to adopt new measures against Tehran ahead of the bloc’s meeting of foreign ministers next Monday, in some restrictions that will fall within the sanctions regime for Human Rights violations.

In this way, the EU will redouble the pressure against the Iranian regime after the latest cases of arrests and death sentences against demonstrators in the context of the massive protests that have taken place in the country in recent months. Humanitarian organizations estimate that more than 500 demonstrators have died from the violent repression of the protests, while Tehran has applied the death penalty against four people and more than a hundred risk death sentences.

At a press conference this Monday in Brussels, the EU’s Foreign Affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, limited himself to pointing out that the situation in Iran will be on the ministers’ agenda next week, indicating that “unfortunately” the events in Iran “They are not going in the right direction.”

Stano recalled the latest rounds of sanctions approved by the Twenty-seven in light of the internal violence by the Iranian authorities and for its military support for Russia, to which it supplies kamikaze drones that Moscow uses in the war in Ukraine, and has pointed out that the EU has always remains open to expanding these measures based on the evolution of events.

THE NUCLEAR DEAL IS NOT DEAD, BUT BLOCKED

Likewise, the Foreign Affairs spokesman referred to the situation in which the negotiations are to get the United States to return to the nuclear agreement with Iran, as well as full respect on the part of Tehran.

In Stano’s words, the pact “is not dead” but he has admitted that the talks are “stranded.” “Efforts to break the blockade continue but the situation that accompanies it, the persecution of protesters, executions and military support for Russia does not make it easy,” he pointed out, insisting that the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell maintains continuous contact with the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hosein Amirabdolahian.
