The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has maintained on Tuesday that the reconstruction of Ukraine “is a long road” that must begin now, and has given his support to international efforts to repair the country after the invasion of Russia.
“We are preparing the ground for the reconstruction and repair of critical infrastructure. This is a long road, but it must start now,” Guterres said in a recorded video broadcast at the Conference on the recovery of Ukraine, which is being held these days in Lugano. , Swiss.
In doing so, the United Nations is committed to supporting the Government of Ukraine in saving lives, strengthening relief efforts, advancing Ukraine’s Development and Recovery Plan, and protecting the hard-won gains towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
Likewise, Guterres has warned that the reconstruction of the damage and devastation of homes, schools, hospitals and other critical infrastructure “will take years.”
“Working closely with the Government of Ukraine and more than 300 local civil society partners and international NGOs, the United Nations is reaching nearly 9 million people with essential and life-saving assistance. Our goal is to reach millions more in the coming months,” said the UN Secretary General.
In this sense, he recalled that 90 percent of Ukrainians are at risk of falling into poverty, a problem for which he asks the international community to back and support the people of Ukraine “during these dark days”.
