At least 20 dead and 38 injured in intercommunal clashes in South Sudan

MADRID 14 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 20 people have been killed and another 38 injured during a series of inter-community clashes that occurred over the weekend in North Tonj County, Warrap State, which has already been affected by such events. in the past.

Violence broke out last Saturday between two members of the Lou community, in Alebek Payam, due to alleged “incitement by criminal elements”, as reported by the state Minister of Information, William Wol Mayom, to the radio station Radio Tamazuj.

The security forces have been unable to intervene, so the death toll could be higher, because a series of floods have left the roads in the area impassable, where they have established checkpoints to prevent the supply of armament.

It is worth noting that last Friday, the country’s president, Salva Kiir, ordered the newly appointed state governor, Francis Marial Abur, to address the violence, which has seen a recent increase at the inter-community level despite the decrease in clashes related to the South Sudanese conflict. Communities have disputes motivated mainly by livestock theft and differences between shepherds and farmers in the most fertile areas of the country, especially due to increased desertification and population displacement.

South Sudan has a unity government that was launched after the 2018 peace agreement between the president, Salva Kiir, and rebel leader Riek Machar, which led to the latter returning to the position of first vice president. of the African country.
