MADRID Jan. 10 () –

The Moldovan authorities announced this Friday the reinforcement of security controls on postal shipments and goods coming from Ukraine after an explosive device camouflaged in a children’s toy was detected at the beginning of the week.

The objective of this intensification of measures is to “prevent this type of situation and guarantee a maximum level of safety in air transport,” explained the Civil Aeronautical Authority of Moldova in a statement.

Thus, all postal shipments and goods sent from Ukraine become classified as “high-risk cargo and mail”, and will be subject to “additional security control measures” for an “indefinite period”.

“The Aviation Security Risk Management Group will continue to assess the situation and work with the relevant authorities and institutions to maintain adequate safeguards,” added the Moldovan authorities.

Finally, the Civil Aeronautical Authority has elaborated that “the safety of passengers and air transport is an absolute priority” for the institution, which is committed to “the highest international standards.”

The announcement of these new measures comes after the Moldovan Border Police announced the discovery of an explosive device camouflaged as a toy car at the International Airport in Chisinau, the country’s capital.
