France summons Israel's ambassador after "deliberate" attacks against UNIFIL

MADRID 11 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of France has summoned the Israeli ambassador in Paris to protest the latest “deliberate” attacks on positions of the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL), which have left four blue helmets dead. ‘ wounded in just two days.

“These attacks constitute a serious violation of International Law and must stop immediately. The Israeli authorities must explain themselves,” claimed a spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry, who recalled that protecting UNIFIL members is an “obligation” for all parts.

In this sense, he has asked that the peace forces be able to fulfill their mandate, which includes, among other things, respecting freedom of movement. France, which recognizes the “difficult” conditions on the ground, participates in this mission with just over 600 troops.

The French Government sees it as “urgent” for there to be a ceasefire in the area, the scene of a constant exchange of attacks between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah militiamen.

UNIFIL reported this Friday that at least two soldiers have been injured in a new attack carried out by the Israeli Army against the mission’s headquarters in the city of Naqoura, located in southern Lebanon. One of the ‘blue helmets’ has been transferred to a hospital in Tire and, according to French authorities, is in a “critical” condition.
