At least 75 dead from floods in Mali since the start of the rainy season

Oct. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Malian authorities have raised the number of deaths to 75 and injuries to 148 as a result of the floods that have affected the country since the beginning of the rainy season, which began in June and since then more than 590 have been registered. floods.

Around 250,000 people have been affected by the storm, especially in the Timbuktu region, which has recorded almost 200 floods and is especially vulnerable due to extreme weather conditions and “poor management” of drainage infrastructure. according to the MaliActu news portal.

The representative of the Ministry of the Environment Garantigui Traoré has assured that the rains have had a “devastating effect” on the country’s agriculture, since a large number of crops have been “widely affected” and that they must now be rehabilitated in order to avoid a food crisis.

Shortly before, the country’s authorities have delayed the start of the school year, scheduled for this Tuesday, until November due to the “state of national emergency”, according to a statement from the Minister of Education, Amadou Sy Savané, collected by Malijet.

Although he has not specified the reasons for this “national emergency”, it could be due to both serious flooding and continued threats from jihadist groups in the country. The African country is currently led by a military junta established after the coups d’état perpetrated in August 2020 and May 2021, both headed by Assimi Goita, current transitional president, who has led a rapprochement with Russia while distanced from both France and Western governments, including its departure in January – along with Burkina Faso and Niger – from the ranks of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
