Oct. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Former Senegalese president Macky Sall has been chosen as head of the list by a new coalition made up of three prominent parties in the African country, including the Alliance for the Republic (APR), ahead of the early legislative elections called for November 17 .
The new coalition, called Takku Wallu Senegal, is made up of Sall’s APR, the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) and Rewmi, who have decided to join forces in what could mean the return of the president to the front line of politics after leaving the position in March, as reported by the Dakar Actu news portal.
The announcement also came a day after the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) party selected the Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, as its head of the list for the elections, called after the decision of the Senegalese president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye – an ally of Sonko – to dissolve the National Assembly, controlled by an opposition coalition, to end the “institutional blockade.”
The decision came after Senegal’s Parliament, controlled by the Benoo Bokk Yakaar (BBY) opposition coalition, rejected a proposal raised by Faye to amend the Constitution as part of efforts to rationalize spending and reform public management in the country.
The current president prevailed in the first round over former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, designated by the ruling party as the APR candidate to try to pick up Sall’s baton. Faye ran supported by Sonko, whose candidacy was rejected by the authorities.
