The history of youtubers in Andorra and Catalan It is not completely new, but this week it has reappeared on the scene. And, everything seems to indicate that on this occasion we will witness the final outcome of it. The Government of the microstate located between France and Spain has agreed that anyone wishing to obtain or renew a residence permit must demonstrate a minimum level of the aforementioned language.
It should be noted that this requirement now includes content creators. A few months ago it had been considered to exclude this growing group of tax residents, mainly because due to their activity they do not work directly in the country. However, this idea has remained in the past. If the project becomes law, they will have to comply with the regulations to be able to continue living in the principality.
Youtubers must demonstrate a minimum of Catalan
The focus of the news is the Native and Official Language bill. Although the initiative still has a long way to go, this week has made significant progress. According to the Andorran News Agency (via EFE), the legislative commission on Education, Research, Culture, Youth and Sports closed the text of the project yesterday Thursday with the support of the majority of the parliamentary groups.
This is a project that has consensus from Demòcrata, the government party, Socialdemòcrata, Ciutadans Compromesos and Concòrdia. The latter explains that each of the points were addressed and that it is expected to finally be approved on April 25. The approval, however, will not result in immediate entry into force, but we will have to wait until April 26, 2026.
In the first renewal you will have to prove an A1 level of Catalan. At this point it has been agreed that it is mandatory to take a 30-hour language training, with the exception that “it can be demonstrated an adequate level of the language”. When requesting the second renewal, residents must demonstrate an A2 level. This, as we say, for all interested parties, including YouTubers.
As we can see, if the law is approved as planned, content creators will still have a long time to continue living in Andorra without complying with this requirement. Although it is also evident that the authorities have begun to take certain measures since his arrival. Not only including them in the language bill, but also, for example, in the real estate world.
