BRUSSELS, July 27. (DPA/EP) –
The Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, has asserted that “we are all equally human” in response to the speech by the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, in which they pointed out that Hungary is not a country of “mixed races”.
“We must never allow our words to betray the most fundamental principle of our existence: we are all equally human,” Schinas wrote on his social networks, where he stressed that hate “has no place” in today’s societies.
Although the message from the vice president of the European Commission does not refer directly to Orbán, Schinas’s staff has later confirmed that, in fact, those words referred to the speech of the Hungarian head of government.
Prime Minister Orbán pointed out during his visit to Transylvania, in Romania, that countries in which “the European population has mixed with non-European population” cannot be considered nations.
“There is a world in which European peoples mix with those who come from outside Europe. Now that is a mestizo world,” added the Hungarian president, defending that in the Carpathians this possibility is open but ruling out miscegenation.
In fact, Orbán’s words have caused his adviser, Zsuzsa Hegedus, to present his resignation on Wednesday after describing the speech given by the president as “Nazi”.
For its part, the International Auschwitz Committee on Tuesday called the speech “stupid” and “dangerous”, although a spokesman for Orbán has stressed that it has been “misunderstood”.
