The Government of Zimbabwe has passed a law that makes strikes lasting more than 72 hours illegal in the health sector and imposes penalties of up to six months in prison for violating the regulations.
The Zimbabwe Association of Physicians for Human Rights has condemned the move in a statement, calling it “draconian”. In addition, he has warned that this will lead to a greater number of doctors looking for work outside the country.
An estimated 4,000 healthcare workers have resigned over the past year, which has been marked by several strikes to demand a pay rise due to the collapse of the local currency and rising inflation, as well as more material and improved facilities.
The measure obtained the approval of the Parliament last November and has now been introduced in the official Gazette of the country.
