Zelensky thanks Denmark for its support and "respectful attitude" towards Ukraine "from the very beginning"

September 14 () –

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked the Danish government for the “important assistance” it has provided to Ukraine following the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022, praising its “respectful attitude” towards the Ukrainian people since the early stages of the conflict, during a meeting with Danish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.

“Denmark has shown a respectful attitude towards Ukraine and Ukrainians from the very beginning and we are very grateful for all their support,” the Ukrainian president said on Friday. “We feel it through the people, through their attitude towards our people, our society and forced migrants,” he added.

Zelensky also stressed that “of course” the support of the Danish authorities has also been evident on the battlefield, noting that this aspect “is a priority” for Ukraine.

In this regard, the head of the Ukrainian government stressed that “Denmark was the first country with which they began joint production of weapons,” such as the ‘Bohdana’ howitzers or the ‘F-16’. Weapons, he added, “are already helping on the front.” “Denmark is truly one of the leaders in supporting our defense sector,” he stressed.

The Danish Parliament has stressed the need for “additional support for Ukraine to survive as an independent nation” after a meeting in which both parties also discussed the development of bilateral cooperation regarding arms production in order to “meet the priority needs of the Ukrainian Defence Forces.”

“Ukraine’s fight for freedom is not just its own fight. Every day they fight a brutal battle for our values of freedom and democracy. Therefore, it is not Ukraine that should be thanked for its financial and military support, but Denmark that should be thanked for its fight, which costs human lives every day,” the Danish government said in a statement, reiterating “to Ukraine’s political leaders” that “the entire Parliament stands behind them and supports their fight” and will continue “to provide support as long as it is needed.”
