Zelensky says that with the US Ukraine "is closer to NATO than ever", but Germany is "sceptical"

MADRID 18 Oct. () –

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, assured this Friday that Germany remains reticent about the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO, but not the United States, whose position brings them “closer than ever” to the Alliance.

“The German position is very important to me,” Zelensky said in an interview with several Ukrainian media, in which he revealed that Berlin continues to show its “skepticism” regarding this issue.

On the other hand, he highlighted, the United States Ukraine is “closer to NATO than ever”, thus in tune with Zelensky’s ‘victory plan’ that has not fully caught on among his allies.

The starting point of this plan revolves around the immediate invitation of Ukraine to NATO. Zelensky has also demanded security guarantees, such as the deployment of deterrence weapons in Ukrainian territory and lifting restrictions on Western weapons to prevent another Russian invasion.

In that same meeting with the media in his country, Zelensky said that the $50 billion in frozen Russian assets that have been promised to Ukraine do not replace the total amount necessary for war reparations.

“They are very important” but, in any case, he stressed, “Ukraine will demand reparations”, trusting that Hungary will not end up blocking the operation. “We will be able to receive this money from the beginning of next year,” he said, insisting that this does not replace the “legitimate use” of using Russian assets.
