Zelensky says new peace plan will allow negotiations with Russia

September 21 () –

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that Ukraine’s new peace plan proposal will allow negotiations with the Russian Federation.

“The plan will be ready at the beginning of November. It will be a start, a basis for talking in any format with Russia. In any format, with any of its representatives, because there will be a plan,” he explained in a press conference reported by the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.

The Ukrainian leader has assured that three of the points of this peace plan have already been finalised, which would allow Russia to be invited to a second peace conference like the one held in Switzerland on 15 and 16 June. “There can be no end to the war without one of the parties,” he argued, an opinion shared by kyiv’s allies.

However, Zelensky has indicated that he believes Russia wants to continue the war, thus casting doubt on Moscow’s willingness to participate in the peace conference, which could be held later this year.

In any case, Ukraine needs to strengthen itself as much as possible before the meeting, Zelensky said at the event, held before the president’s departure for New York to participate in the annual session of the UN General Assembly. Zelenky hopes to meet with US President Joe Biden and the two favourites to succeed him, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
