Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday congratulated Labour leader and incoming UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his “resounding” victory in the general election and thanked outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his continued British support for Ukraine, which he said would continue through his successor.
“Ukraine and the United Kingdom have been and will remain trusted allies and we will continue to defend and promote our shared values of life, freedom and a rules-based international order,” Zelensky said in a message of thanks posted on his social media account X.
The Ukrainian president took the opportunity to wish the new British government “every success both in domestic affairs and in strengthening leadership on the world stage” and looks forward to working closely together to strengthen the Ukrainian-British partnership and restore international peace and security.
Finally, Zelensky dedicated a few words to his “good friend” Sunak for his government’s “constant support”, translated for example in the deliveries of Challenger tanks and Storm Shadow missiles, as well as the training of Ukrainian fighter pilots on British soil and, more recently, the signing of the first bilateral security agreement.
