Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron for permission from his partners to attack airfields that Russia uses to bomb Ukrainian territory, especially after this week’s deadly attack on the city of Poltava, which left 55 dead and more than 300 injured.

“I have stressed once again that we urgently need permission from our partners to attack the airfields from which bomb carriers and guided missiles take off, and that is why we count on the unity of our allies in this matter,” Zelensky said on his X social media account.

He also briefed him on Ukraine’s needs in terms of air defence, electronic warfare systems, armoured vehicles and artillery, after which they agreed to further contacts.

“On the eve of the meeting of the contact group in the Ramstein group, we discussed defence cooperation, the preparation of a new military aid package from France and the possibility of joint production of certain types of weapons,” he added.

Macron, for his part, expressed his condolences for the “indiscriminate” attack in Poltava and reiterated his support for Ukraine in the war against Russia.

Finally, Zelensky congratulated the French president on the appointment of former minister and European Commissioner Michel Barnier, a member of the conservative political family, as the new prime minister, after a succession of rounds of consultations marked by a lack of consensus.
