Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that if Donald Trump wins the upcoming US election, working with the tycoon would be “hard work”, but stressed that Ukrainians are “very hard-working”.
The Ukrainian leader has given an interview to the British broadcaster BBC in which he has addressed what the future of relations between kyiv and Washington will be after November 5, the date on which the United States will hold presidential elections between Trump and the current president, Joe Biden.
Zelensky has thus underlined his willingness to collaborate with whoever occupies the White House after the elections, although he has assessed that Trump’s vice-presidential candidate, Senator JD Vance, who has on occasion claimed to be indifferent to what is happening in Ukraine, perhaps “does not understand” what is happening in kyiv.
“Maybe he doesn’t really understand what’s going on in Ukraine, so we have to work hard with the United States,” the Ukrainian leader said, acknowledging kyiv’s fears of a possible cooling of US commitment to Ukraine’s security if Trump wins.
On the other hand, Zelensky also addressed the change of government in the United Kingdom, where the Labour Party’s Keir Starmer won the parliamentary elections at the beginning of the month. “I do not think that the position of the United Kingdom will change,” said Zelensky, who nevertheless urged the Prime Minister to take a leading role in supporting Kiev.
The Ukrainian president is currently visiting the UK, where he attended the summit of the European Political Community the day before with nearly fifty leaders from the continent. He is expected to address a meeting of the British cabinet on Friday.
