It is no longer possible to view certain videos from North Korea. The American platform YouTube has suppressed three channels belonging to North Koreans, which broadcast videos that showed the alleged daily life of the regime. These filmmakers were closely linked to Pyongyang propaganda.

“Hello everyone, I’m Song A-il from Pyongyang. I’m 11 years old and I’m in fifth grade. Pyongyang, where I live, is a wonderful city, because there are amusement parks everywhere. Lots of things for children .
This video, like the others on the Sally Parks or Yumi channel, is no longer accessible on the internet. YouTube has just shut down three North Korean channels linked to regime propaganda.
“A crucial window on North Korea”
The North American platform has not specified the reasons for the suppression, but it occurs at a time when the United States intensifies its sanctions against the regime. However, the decision puts researchers and analysts on North Korea in a bind.
“These videos also provide a crucial window on North Korea. It is an extremely closed country and these types of videos are very useful to understand what is really happening in the country,” says Shreyas Reddy, a journalist for the specialized website NK News.
“It may be propaganda, but an experienced observer can read between the lines to interpret and understand more about North Korea. Completely removing these videos will make it difficult to understand and interact with North Korea,” she adds.
