When Microsoft introduced the Recall functionality for the Windows 11 operating system, many saw it as an advance, but most saw it as a serious security problem that threatened user privacy.
Recall It basically remembers everything you do in the Windows 11 operating system, taking countless screenshots so that, whenever you want, you can go back in time to know what you were doing, for example, three months ago.
It sounds very nice, but thinking about it coldly, we were facing a security functionality that directly threatened the security of users, and even more so if an external attacker could access this Windows feature.
After initial criticism, Microsoft just made a series of changes in this controversial feature for your operating system, and most importantly is that it will definitely be a totally optional feature, we can even uninstall it completely if we wish..
In this way, the controversial Recall function for PCs with Copilot+ in Windows 11 will be optional and completely uninstallable.
The initial version of Windows Recall that was shown made it too easy to access user data, but now everything the function does will be encrypted and linked to the trusted platform module.
Accessing this data would require additional Windows Hello security authorization with your face, fingerprint, or PIN.
And now Recall will process all data in a security enclave based on virtualization.
This has been confirmed to TheVerge, David Westonvice president of enterprise and security at Microsoft: “We’ve moved all screenshot processing and all sensitive processes into a virtualization-based security enclave, so we put it all in a virtual machine. The application outside the virtualization-based enclave runs in a malware-protected process, which would essentially require a malicious kernel driver to access.”
Likewise, they have implemented several software updates, including the ability to filter applications and websites. Likewise, the user, if he decides to use Recall, you will be able to delete specific parts of this data.
Microsoft has also made sure that it is impossible to install Recall on computers other than Copilot+despite the fact that at the beginning of the year certain users managed to run this feature on unsuitable systems.
At the moment this renewed Recall will be available for Windows Insider members in October, and it is unknown when it will arrive for everyone in a stable version for compatible computers.
