June 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Houthi rebels of Yemen have claimed responsibility this Friday for launching several missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles against two merchant ships in the waters of the Red Sea within the framework of an increase in the launch of projectiles by the group in retaliation for the Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip.
As detailed by the military spokesman for the Houthis, Yahya Sari, in a statement published on social networks, the vessels are the ‘Elbella’, a container ship flying the Maltese flag; and the ‘AAL Genova’, a cargo ship flying the flag of Cyprus, which had broken the ban on heading to Israeli ports.
“The operation has been carried out with several drones, ballistic and naval missiles, which achieved precise hits on the target,” detailed Sari, who stressed that the Yemeni insurgents “will continue with their operations” until the cessation of the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis, who have controlled the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and other areas in the north and west of the country since 2015, have launched several attacks against Israel and ships with some type of Israeli connection in the wake of the Gaza offensive, while also threatened to attack US and British ships in response to attacks on Yemen.
