Yazaki opens factory in Guatemala as part of “call to action”

Lindsey Zuluaga, Special Advisor for International Economy and Development to the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, and representatives of the Alliance for Central America, visited Guatemala in order to continue the efforts of the private sector to offer more opportunities in the Central American country. .

Guatemala has become a key point for migration, since it is the last link in the connection with North America, and the visit of the delegation is related to initiatives that allow the inhabitants to find forms of decent livelihood without the need to migrate.

This time, US government officials participated in the inauguration of the Yazaki North America, Inc. automotive component plant, a “Call to Action” partner, which began operations in the department of San Marcos, on the border with Mexico.

Zuluaga assured that it is a sign that more investments will come.

“Today’s opening is the first of many to come and we look forward to celebrating new investment and more employment opportunities in the years to come,” he said.

In addition, he reiterated that it is a new chapter of the public-private alliance called “Central America Ahead”, which brings new commitments from the United States government.

“Support for private sector investments and clean energy infrastructure and to develop the workforce that countries like Guatemala need for the future,” is part of Zuluaga’s offer, as a representative of Harris.

By the end of 2023, the Yasaki plant expects to offer 1,200 job opportunities to residents of the sector, taking into account that the department of San Marcos registers high rates of expulsion of migrants, due to its proximity to the border with Mexico.

In 2022 alone, the Guatemalan Migration Institute registered more than 12,000 deportees from this department.

Yazaki is a company in the automotive industry that has 140 companies in 45 countries, and Guatemala joins as number 46 in the group.

Company executives indicated that in the next five years the company has plans to expand its operations, which will mean job opportunities for thousands more Guatemalans.
