The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, will travel to China in the next few hours in response to an invitation from her counterpart from the Asian country, Xi Jinping, an official media reported on Monday, the same day that the Chinese embassy in Tegucigalpa was formally opened. .

The government of the leftist Castro announced in March that it was breaking diplomatic relations with Taiwan, an ally of the United States, and weeks later said that it would seek to “reprofile” its debt with the financial support of China and that it intended to sign a trade agreement with that country. .

The president “will be accompanied by a large delegation of businessmen, industrialists, producers, and officials to sign 15 agreements that will begin trade negotiations in the areas of coffee, tobacco, shrimp, melon, cocoa, and chocolate,” reported the official media outlet Poder Popular.

Since the weekend, Honduran businessmen have been in China exploring commercial exchange opportunities, representing companies such as Exporter, Empacadora Litoral, Pacific Fresh Export, Riqueza Marina, Oriental Seafood, CONEXH, Granjas Marinas, Distribuidora Istmania and Agrolibano, he added.

Castro, who in his presidential campaign had already raised the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Asian giant, will travel after it was announced that Beijing approved the appointment of scientist Salvador Moncada as Honduran ambassador there.
