Xi tells Guterres he is willing to increase cooperation with the UN for the "revitalization" of Africa

September 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his willingness to increase cooperation with the UN to achieve the “revitalization” of Africa during his meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing on Thursday.

In this regard, he stressed that the Chinese government attaches great importance to peace, stability and development on the African continent, according to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

“I have put forward the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, hoping that people around the world, including those in Africa, can enjoy a better life,” the Chinese president said.

Xi also expressed his appreciation for the UN’s attention to Africa, and stressed the need to practice multilateralism based on the “essential role” of the United Nations, after which Guterres said he was ready to strengthen cooperation with China in “all pillars” of the organization.

“China’s modernization will create more opportunities for countries around the world and provide new impetus for maintaining global peace and promoting shared development,” Xi added.

The Chinese president had earlier expressed the Asian giant’s willingness to “deepen its cooperation” with African countries, and has offered “financial support” to the continent worth 360 billion yuan (around 45.73 billion euros) over the next three years.

Around 25 African leaders have travelled to Beijing to take part in the summit, which is the largest diplomatic meeting in China since the coronavirus pandemic and is a sign of the growing influence of the Asian giant on the continent.
