Xi Jinping applauds Honduras' "historic" decision to restore relations with China

June 12 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of China, Xi Jinping, applauded this Monday the “historic” decision of Honduras to reestablish diplomatic relations with China on the occasion of the visit of the Honduran president, Xiomara Castro, to the Asian giant.

“You have resolutely fulfilled your electoral promise to establish diplomatic relations with China, making a historic decision that demonstrates a firm political will,” said the host president during the welcome ceremony, according to information collected by the CGTN television network.

The Great Palace of the People has served as the setting for the reception of the Honduran president, who is on a state visit until this Wednesday and announced on Sunday the opening of her first Embassy in China.

“In March this year, China established diplomatic relations with Honduras. You are the first Honduran president to pay a state visit to China. Your arrival opens a new chapter in the history of relations between China and Honduras, which has significant special and important. I would like to give her a warm welcome,” said the Chinese president, who stressed that he is the first female president in the history of Honduras.

In this sense, he has congratulated Castro for his political achievements and has expressed his “unconditional political support.” In addition, she has spoken of the “active role played by her husband”, former President Manuel Zelaya, and has assured that she has contributed to an improvement in relations between the two countries.

Thus, he has emphasized that the relationship between the parties “is in good health and dynamism.” “China will remain committed to developing these relations and will support Honduras in taking economic and social steps and forging a good relationship with China based on mutual respect and equality,” she said. Xi has also expressed his willingness to work with the Honduran authorities with “strategic” views and to promote greater cooperation between the parties.

Castro arrived in the country on Friday for a six-day visit three months after the Central American country broke its diplomatic ties with Taiwan to establish them with the Asian giant.
