The president of China, Xi Jinping, expressed this Wednesday before the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas, his wish that the Palestinian state be recognized as a full member of the United Nations.
Palestine has been a non-member UN observer state since November 2012 by virtue of a General Assembly resolution reflecting its desire to become a full member following the application submitted on September 23, 2011.
In July, the Palestinian Authority announced that it would renew this diplomatic initiative, although in recent months it has also requested the suspension of Israel’s membership in the organization for repeatedly failing to comply with the resolutions of the General Assembly.
On the other hand, Xi has once again reiterated in his meeting with Abbas China’s willingness to mediate in the conflict in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestinian territories. In this sense, he has proposed holding an international peace conference to encourage peace talks.
“China is willing to strengthen coordination with the Palestinian side and work for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue,” Xi said, adding that he hoped to play a “positive” role for “reconciliation” in the region, has collected the Xinhua news agency.
For his part, Abbas has informed the Chinese president of the latest “violations by the Israeli occupation, such as the expansion of settlements, deaths from clashes with settlers or the “desecration” of the Jerusalem Mosque Esplanade.
The president of the Palestinian Authority has also reaffirmed the principle of ‘One China’, at the same time that he has assured that he will increase cooperation with the Asian giant on different fronts, the WAFA news agency has reported.
China has increased its role in the Middle East and has played a key role in the agreement signed in March between Iran and Saudi Arabia –the two main powers in the area– to restore their relations, broken in 2016. The agreement has allowed a reduction of tensions in the Middle East and acceleration of contacts in search of a peace agreement in Yemen.
