Xbox establishes a team dedicated to the preservation of video games

April 8 (Portaltic/EP) –

Xbox has established a team dedicated to video game preservationwith which they intend to guarantee access to the titles of this division of Microsoft regardless of the changes that come to the 'hardware'.

Xbox offers on its most recent consoles backwards compatibility with titles from previous models (original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One), either with a digital version or taking advantage of the disc that the user has purchased.

This backward compatibility is a form of keep old games in use that the technological advances of the consoles themselves have made obsolete and, therefore, to preserve them. Precisely what Xbox president Sarah Bond intends to do with the new team she has established at the company.

This is a group of people who will be dedicated to the preservation of Xbox games. “We're building on our strong history of offering backwards compatibility to our players, and we remain committed to presenting the incredible library of Xbox games for future generations of gamers to enjoy,” as Bond says in an internal email picked up by Windows Central and confirmed by Xbox.

It is not the first time that the company has made a plea in favor of preserving video games. In 2021, the current CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, defended emulation as a way to preserve past video games on current consoles for which they are no longer available, something for which he also demanded greater support from of the industry.

The new generations of video game consoles have left games that were not designed for the most cutting-edge technological features obsolete, although cloud services and the new 'hardware' models inspired by retro consoles have allowed us to recover and maintain a part of them.

One problem that games face is maintaining their servers. The games that are released only in digital version, without physical support to support it, they depend on the servers for their continuity. If these are closed, the game hours and all the achievements obtained disappear along with the video game itself.
