X-Silicon has presented its hybrid core architecture with CPU, GPU and NPU integrated into the same processor

Nowadays, most computer processors have an integrated GPUbut the boys from X-Silicon They want to go one step further. The company has developed an architecture called C-GPU where integrates CPU and GPU, and even NPU, on the same chip. All this under the RISC-V architecture what will be of Open Source and that will allow us to offer solutions for the automotive industry, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, etc.

This core architecture will offer advantages over the current ones that integrate CPU and GPU separately on the same SoC, as a greater efficiency in this type of tasks no need to transfer data between CPU and GPUwhich is reflected in a lower memory consumption. Furthermore, being open source and integrating CPU and GPU in the same core, only one workflow will be needed for all tasks. This architecture allows tackle any type of tasksa solution flexible and scalable not only for CPU tasks, but also for GPU loads and AI tasks.

The unit is made up of 16 32-bit FPUsa ALU Scaler for integer and floating point instructions. For the nuclei it has a unified instruction decoder connected to a thread scheduler, it also has a rasterizer, a texture unit, and a pixel processor in addition to a Neural Engine unit. For the video output, everything is taken to a buffer that connects to this video output, which is also compatible with the Open GL, Vulkan, Mesa and OpenCL APIs. For now there is no prototype built that can show the potential of this new architecture, but the development kits will be made available to interested parties for the end of this year.

I am a Computer Engineer and my specialty is automation and robotics. My passion for hardware began at the age of 14 when I broke down my first computer: a 386 DX 40 with 4MB of RAM and 210MB of hard drive. I continue to give free rein to my passion in the technical articles I write for Geeknetic. I dedicate most of my free time to video games, contemporary and retro, on the more than 20 consoles I have, in addition to the PC.
