In The War Within, WoW players travel to Khaz Algar, the home of the earthen people off the western coast of Pandaria. Their capital, Dornogal, is located on the Isle of Dorn and is the new meeting point between the Alliance and the Horde. The rest of the Khaz Algar map is made up of three subterranean regions: Echoing Caverns, a gigantic cavern where we find the Mechaorators, who are the earthen people in charge of maintaining the ancient machines of the titans; Hallowing, the home of the Arathi, a people who fight against the nerubians; and Azj-Kahet, the pinnacle of nerubian society.
The first steps of The War Within campaign have served to introduce Xal’atath, the Harbinger of the Void who is gathering nerubian forces, and to recover Alleria Windrunner, who after embracing the darkness to defeat it lost Turalyon, her lover and the father of her son Arator. Now Alleria, along with the heroes of the Alliance and the Horde, will fight against Xal’atath, who aims to conquer Azeroth. Behind the Worldsoul Saga we have Chris Metzen, who after Metzen left Blizzard in 2016 and returned in 2022 as a creative advisor on World of Warcraft, and has been the franchise’s creative director since 2023. Metzen is also the co-creator of Diablo and StarCraft.
In addition to a new storyline to climb to the new level cap of 80, The War Within adds other new features such as Warbands, a system that allows all characters on a Battle.net account to share progression. Regardless of faction, heroes will share access to the bank, the renown system, achievements, collections, and more. Additionally, each specialization receives 2 heroic talent trees based on archetypes from the Warcraft universe, while the activity endgame Depths allows you to explore realms solo or with up to four players alongside Brann Bronzebeard, who has his own talent tree.
The War Within also inherits one of the biggest new features from Dragonflight: dynamic flight, now called the Skywalker, is now available to all mounts. And as with every expansion, we have a set of eight dungeons, four world bosses, and the Nerub’ar Palace raid with eight bosses. The first season of The War Within will begin on September 11 with the opening of the new raid on Normal and Heroic difficulties and the dungeons on Mythic difficulty 0. Season 2 of PvP will also begin. A week later, the raid and dungeons will be available on Mythic+ difficulty.
