World of Warcraft celebrates its 20th anniversary with an update that looks back

There are not too many online games that can celebrate their 20th anniversary in top form, and this is precisely what World of Warcraft (WoW) is doing today. When the MMO servers come back online in the morning, players will have access to content from a new update that commemorates the two decades that the Blizzard Entertainment game has been in existence.

World of Warcraft’s 20th anniversary celebration runs through January 7, 2025, taking a look back and moving the action outside of the Caverns of Time in Tanaris. There, players who are at least level 10 will be able to participate in a series of activities that are rewarded with a new currency, the bronze celebration token, which is used to obtain new objects for the collection. Among the activities available we have the Blackrock Depths raid and classic dungeons (Death Mines, Zul’Farrak, two wings of The Massacre and Stratholme) with Time Walk.

Players have the option to join the Blackrock Depths raid with the finder or form their own groups of 10 to 15 players. To enter the original version of the aforementioned dungeons you have to queue in the group finder.

Beyond the instantiated content we have the activities in Tanaris. The most striking are those that will bring back bosses from the world of the past such as the Destiny Walker, Azuregos, Lord Kazzak, the Dragons of the Nightmare, the Shah of Wrath and Archavon the Stone Watcher. Additionally, Chromie has a 10- to 20-player quest related to the Gates of Ahn’qiraj. For those who prefer PvP content there is a retro battlefield inspired by the dawn of Alterac Valley. Players who complete a quest will receive one of two mounts depending on which faction their character belongs to.

On a cosmetic level there are also new features. The November trading post features back skins in the form of shields representing the Warcraft III factions (orcs, humans, night elves and the Scourge), while event tokens can be exchanged for cosmetic items. Among the available offering we have modern versions of classic Tier 2 sets, mounts, toys and pets. Additionally, items from other anniversaries are returning for a limited time, including Blizzard Bear Cub and the Obsidian Worldbreaker mount.

And like any other update, this one also includes numerous adjustments for all classes and other features such as new Ascension forms for the shaman and new classes for the dractyr.
