Central America has gained ground

Another trade agreement that has borne fruit for Mexico in this six-year term is Central America, which was signed with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua in 2011, but this government has focused on strengthening its relationship in that region, In fact, the president has made tours for this purpose.

Banxico data indicates that the value of Central American exports has increased 42%, going from 6,503 million dollars in 2018 to 9,266 million.

El Salvador and Guatemala are the countries in that region that have driven growth.

Although AMLO has also had disagreements with the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, regarding the security policy that each has implemented, in the commercial field Mexico has won.

The figures indicate that, in 2018, at the end of Enrique Peña Nieto’s six-year term, exports from Mexico to El Salvador stood at 793,700 dollars, but by 2023, they reached 1,206 million dollars, an increase of 52%.

Regarding Guatemala, exports went from 1,954 million dollars to 2,942 million dollars, 51% more.

In 2022, AMLO indicated that the Mexican strategy of Looking South, which seeks to expand and strengthen Mexico’s presence in the region.

Malaysia and the Philippines lead growth

In Asia, Malaysia and the Philippines have become the main countries for Mexico, although the value is still small, the growth they have presented is the greatest.

In 2018, the value of exports from Mexico to Malaysia was 240,576 dollars, by 2023 it rose to 442,792 dollars, a growth of 84%.

Meanwhile, exports from Mexico to the Philippines have gone from $120,424 to $215,257, an increase of 79%.
