With Putin or Zelensky? The ambiguous position of Latin America regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict

First modification:

Latin American countries have defended a supposed neutrality in the face of the war in Ukraine. Most of the region’s leaders have not condemned Russia or the Kremlin for their invasion, but neither have they openly endorsed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. What is the reason for this lack of a clear position in the region? What do the Latin countries gain and lose in economic and political matters if they openly support Ukraine or Russia? We discuss it in this discussion.

Latin American giants such as Brazil, Mexico and Argentina continue their commercial relations with Moscow. In fact, Latin America has not supported the economic sanctions that Washington and the European Union have imposed against Russia. All this despite the fact that most of the Latin American countries have supported the most important resolutions that have been voted in the UN General Assembly against the war.

Both in the resolution of March 2, 2022, with which the UN deplored the Russian aggression, and in the one of March 24, which supported humanitarian aid in Ukraine and demanded the immediate cessation of hostilities, more than 15 Latin American countries they voted in favour.

But although Brazil also voted yes, it qualified its position by making it clear that it was against “divisive language” and insisted that humanitarian crises should not be politicized. On the other side, Bolivia, Cuba, El Salvador and Nicaragua abstained from voting, while Venezuela was absent.

All this is a sample of the ambivalent position that Latin America has had regarding the conflict in Ukraine. In this context, the former Colombian Peace Commissioner, Sergio Jaramillo, is leading the ‘Hold on Ukraine’ initiative, which seeks to establish strong support for the Ukrainian people.

How decisive is Latino support for the war in Ukraine? Would the amount of weapons and ammunition that could be shipped from the region really have a significant impact? We analyze it from the hand of our guests:

– Héctor Abad Faciolince, Colombian writer and journalist who supports the ‘Hold on Ukraine’ proposal.

– Jorelvy Calixto, teacher in international affairs with a specialty in politics.
