After 11 days of commemorations and farewells in honor of Elizabeth II, this Monday, September 19, family members, citizens and state leaders from around the world finally said goodbye to the monarch. The coffin arrived at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, outside London, where the UK’s longest-serving queen will rest next to the tomb of her father, King George VI; her mother, Elizabeth Bowes, known as the Queen Mother and her husband, Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
Elizabeth II’s funeral ceremony, the first for a British monarch to be broadcast, marked the first state funeral since Winston Churchill’s in 1965.
Thus ended the second Elizabethan era, one of the most remarkable in the history of the United Kingdom, with 70 years as head of state and an influence that was synonymous with stability during the intervening decades.
