Will the digital ID replace the physical document?

In recent days, the National Registry of Civil Status reported that it will begin a process of Mass use of the new digital ID that until now was only issued at the will of the citizens.

From now on, according to the entity, Colombians will have a hybrid identification document: both digital and physical. We tell you what you need to know about this new document.

Why will the Colombian identity card be changed?

The National Registrar, Alexander Vega, in an interview for Blu Radio, explained that the change is made since the current card is 22 years old and has not been updated.

Our country needed to update the document in accordance with international standards, ICAO, which is the one that regulates all the security elements of identification documents. The idea is that the identity card be updated, maintain facial biometric data so that they can interoperate with other digital entities.”, he explained.

Likewise, this change is sought because a large part of the platforms are going to migrate to the digital identification system. Namely, private and public entities and banks.

According to the National Registry, the digital card can be used to enter the member and associated countries of the Andean Community: Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

When will the change take place?

Since September 1, the production of the traditional yellow card was stopped to change its production and design. From 2023 the new document will be mandatory, the registrar announced.

It should be clarified that the yellow card will not lose validity until the order is made official.

Why does the digital card cost?

Vega also explained that this document has a cost since this is not a digital photograph. “A physical document is delivered that is activated on the cell phone. A digital image is not being given, a new physical document is being delivered through the duplicate,” she pointed out.

How much does the new digital ID cost?

The digital card it costs 55,750 Colombian pesosaccording to the National Registry.

This amount can be paid in person at Banco Popular, Efecty, Supergiros, Matrix Giros and Servicios SAS or at 4-72. In this case, you must have the receipt when you schedule the appointment because the system will ask you for the transaction details.

Also, virtually, through the secure online payment system (PSE) when you schedule the respective appointment.

How to apply for the digital ID?

In order to obtain this document you must:

1. Enter the website of the National Registry and select the option: Process digital ID.

2. Complete the personal data: full name, document number, issue date, email, cell phone, address and a password.

3. Pay the cost of the procedure, and schedule the appointment.

4. go to the Registrar’s office on the selected date to take the photos and fingerprints.

5. Verify the status of the procedure on the entity’s page.

6. Go to claim the physical document, once the system says it is ready.

7. Download the application: Colombia Digital ID.

8. Activate the digital document from the QR code or activation link that arrives in the email.
