Pope Francis will undergo abdominal surgery on Wednesday afternoon at the Gemelli hospital in Rome, the Vatican said in a statement. The Vatican added that his medical team had decided in recent days that surgery was necessary and that he is expected to remain in hospital for a few days to recover.
