Wilders bets on the "strictest" immigration policy in the history of the Netherlands

May 16. () –

The leader of the far-right Freedom Party (PVV), Geert Wilders, promised his electorate this Thursday that the Netherlands will have the “strictest” immigration policy in its history after reaching a minimum agreement to form a government with three center-right parties, an Executive that, however, will not be headed by him.

Wilders has thus highlighted that the country will undergo a “radical change” in its asylum policy, as he assured during his electoral campaign before the November elections, from which he emerged victorious although not with enough support to govern alone. Since the election results came to light, negotiations to form a government have become entrenched, to such an extent that Wilders himself resigned in March to be the country’s next prime minister.

“Today we are writing history. The sun will shine again in the Netherlands,” said the Dutch politician from the city of The Hague after his party reached an agreement with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). ), New Social Contract (NSC) and the Peasant-Citizen Movement (BBB) almost six months after the elections.

The coalition in question is considering the possibility of declaring an “asylum crisis” to implement, in effect, emergency measures, which would include restrictions on family reunification and the social benefits that these people could receive until now. “The Netherlands must belong to the category of member countries with the strictest admission measures in Europe,” he highlighted, according to information from the public broadcaster NOS.

In addition, it has announced a plan to ease environmental regulation for farmers and cancel subsidies for sustainable energy. However, the parties in question still have to overcome the obstacle of deciding who will head the Government.
