Why integrate Lidar into a vacuum cleaner? The brand’s answer is to integrate part of the effort made by its research and development department into more devices. According to Tony Xia, general manager of Latin America for the brand, as of March 2024, Dreame has applied for up to 4,276 patents worldwide, of which 2,371 have already been authorized.
In one of the products that Expansión tested, the Dreame L20 Ultra, this detail can be seen in action when operating the device. Compared to some options on the market, such as the Roomba i3, this device is capable of identifying certain obstacles that are more difficult to overcome, such as cables or mats, which in the case of the iRobot equipment are almost impossible to overcome.
“The impact of customized cleaning solutions in robotic vacuum cleaners is expected to be the main driver of the robotic vacuum cleaner market,” Xia said, citing one of the challenges but also drivers of the adoption of more sophisticated service robots such as the device it introduced in the country in May this year.
Although the inclusion of this type of technology is not typical of autonomous vehicles or robots, it is one of those that is rarely seen in the smart home market.
An IDTech report, which was only released in 2024, notes that the initial purpose of integrating lidar into the automotive industry was to leverage its benefits to address the limitations of existing sensors, such as cameras, and that secondly, automotive component suppliers are just beginning to use it, however few companies outside this sector apply it in other activities.
