On October 6, 153 million Brazilian voters are called to the polls to elect their mayors and renew the composition of the municipal chambers in 5,569 cities of this continental-sized country. In total there are 453,302 candidates, according to the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), 21% less than four years ago. Political analysts attribute this drop to the lack of confidence of citizens in traditional politics, the high cost of electoral campaigns and the limitations imposed by the coalitions on the parties that comprise them. The second round is scheduled for October 27, but only in those municipalities with more than 200,000 voters, where the candidates for mayor do not achieve an absolute majority.
