( Spanish) – Major General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo was born on January 8, 1961 in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche. He has more than four decades of experience in the military, according to information from the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena).
He entered the Heroic Military College in 1978, where he graduated as a second lieutenant of Cavalry, and also has a degree in Military Administration from the Higher School of War.
He has two master’s degrees: Military Administration for National Security and Defense, from the National Defense College, and another in Public Administration. He also holds diplomas and courses on National Security and Defense.
As for public service within the Armed Forces, he has held positions such as director of the Army and Air Force Language Center and general director of Social Communication in Mexico City of the Sedena, during the six-year term of President Felipe Calderón (2006-2012).
In March 2010, members of the Army murdered Jorge Antonio Mercado Alonso and Javier Francisco Arredondo Verdugo, two students at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Monterrey, Nuevo León. The military identified the students as criminals and altered the crime scene to plant weapons on them.
In October 2013, a federal judge sentenced five soldiers involved in the murder of the young men to 90 years in prison.
Following Trevilla Trejo’s appointment, the president-elect was questioned at her press conference on September 9 whether the general had any involvement in the case of the murdered youth, since he was the head of communications for Sedena when the events occurred.
“I also checked that they did not have any previous record with the National Human Rights Commission, and they do not have any previous record. I am convinced that it has nothing to do with this case,” said Sheinbaum when questioned by a reporter about the incident.
He assured that all the division generals have more than 40 years of service in the Sedena.
“Most of the division generals participated in a previous government. In particular, General Trevilla is currently in charge of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which was an area created by AMLO. He knows the work of the Army, the National Guard, and the works carried out by the National Defense Secretariat very well. When I spoke with him, I was convinced by his profile,” said the future president.
During his career from junior officer to lieutenant colonel, Trevilla Trejo led section and squadron units in cavalry regiments and served on General Staffs in military zones, such as the border in Chiapas.
As a colonel and general, he has held positions such as head of the National Defense Staff Monitoring Group, commander of the 16th Motorized Cavalry Regiment. Currently, he is head of the Joint Staff of the National Defense.
He also served abroad as deputy military and air attaché at the Mexican embassies in Germany and Poland.
Among the decorations received are those for Military Merit in the rank of Band; Merit in the Campaign Against Drug Trafficking, and Perseverance. And a special recognition for 45 years of uninterrupted service in the active service.
He also received the Mexican Legion of Honor and distinctions for his work in the implementation of the DN-III-E Plan for aid and rescue of the population and a Special Distinction for COVID-19, as well as the Bicentennial Medal of the Heroic Military College 1823-2023.
